(Lisbon).- Argentina's gambling industry has undergone a remarkable transformation—from informal colonial-era games to a complex, digitally driven landscape regulated at a provincial level.

The History of Gambling in Argentina explained by Atlaslive: From Colonial Roots to the Digital Age

Gambling in Argentina dates back to the 1500s, when Spanish settlers introduced card games and betting. Horse racing became the nation’s first organized betting activity, gaining prestige in the 19th century with the founding of the Jockey Club Argentino and the introduction of pari-mutuel betting.

The 20th century marked the expansion of state-regulated casinos and the rise of national lotteries. Under Juan Perón, gambling was both promoted for revenue and restricted for social control. The iconic Mar del Plata casino became a symbol of this era.

By the 1990s, deregulation and privatization under President Carlos Menem spurred a gambling boom. Slot machines became widespread, and large casino-resort complexes emerged, attracting domestic and international players.

The 2000s ushered in online gambling and mobile betting, complicating regulatory oversight. Provinces like Buenos Aires led the way in licensing online operators, while others imposed tighter controls. The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated the shift to digital platforms, highlighting the need for responsible gambling measures.

Today, Argentina’s gambling market faces major challenges, including economic instability, fragmented taxation, and a lack of regulation for cryptocurrencies. Still, its future remains promising—dependent on unified policies that promote growth, fairness, and player protection.
